Which Cleaning Chemicals Should Never Be Mixed (And Why)

Most people know not to mix bleach and ammonia — but there are several other common household cleaning product combinations that are just as dangerous. As professional cleaners with over a decade of experience handling commercial-grade chemicals safely, we want to share what you should never mix at home.

⚠️ Never Mix These

1. Bleach + Ammonia

Creates chloramine gas — causes respiratory irritation, chest pain and in high concentrations can be life-threatening. Many glass cleaners and floor cleaners contain ammonia, so always check labels before using alongside bleach.

2. Bleach + Vinegar (or any acid)

Mixing bleach with any acidic cleaner (including white vinegar, which is popular in DIY cleaning) releases chlorine gas. Even small amounts can cause eye, nose and throat irritation.

3. Bleach + Rubbing Alcohol

Produces chloroform and other toxic compounds. This combination is more common than you'd think — people sometimes mix rubbing alcohol with a bleach-based surface spray thinking they're creating a "super sanitiser." They're not.

4. Hydrogen Peroxide + Vinegar

Each is a safe, effective cleaner on its own. But mixed together they form peracetic acid, which is corrosive to eyes and lungs. Use them separately (spray one, wipe it off, then apply the other if needed).

5. Different Drain Cleaners

Never mix two different brands of drain cleaner — one may be acid-based, the other alkaline, and the reaction can be violent. Stick to one product at a time and flush thoroughly with water between uses.
